Posted on October 11, 2013 at 9:37 am

Electronic Arts has reportedly made the verdict to shut down one among its studios in North Carolina. The studio focused mainly on free-to-play games for mobile devices.

The report comes from website The Escapist which received word of the studio’s closure from an anonymous source. The studio worked on and maintained games like Monopoly Hotels, which released for iOS devices in 2011. The anonymous source told The Escapist that almost all of the workers could be relocated within Electronic Arts.

Our Take
Studio closures are never excellent news. We are hoping that the employees of the North Carolina studio should be capable of finding new work, or continuing work at Electronic Arts quickly. I’m curious what the enormous picture implications are for Electronic Arts to near down a studio occupied with free-to-play games. Are free-to-play games not performing well for Electronic Arts? They’re certainly performing well for some publishers.

Sniper Elite 3 Announcement Trailer Teases 2014 Release

Posted on October 10, 2013 at 12:28 pm

While Rebellion Development’s Sniper Elite series might not resonate at the same level as a Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty title, the title shows loads of potential, especially if the developers would ever allow players some open world freedom with their sniping. The knock against the Sniper Elite series is that it possesses some great gameplay features, however the scenarios surrounding them lack the imagination required to take the title to tentpole status. Words like “generic” and “unconnected” were utilized in describing the second one installment.

However, recent announcements could provide a cause of hope. In accordance with their latest press release, the concept that of an open world can be introduced into the third entry into the Sniper Elite series (not counting the Nazi Zombies spinoff):

“We’re very excited to be working with 505 Games again on a sequel with a purpose to build at the highly successful Sniper Elite V2. We”ve got some great ideas to enhance on what we did before and feedback from fans have been invaluable. Sniper Elite V2 was just the start of what we wish to do with the franchise, there are things we didn’t have time to do before that we will really examine featuring this time. We wish to talk about making this latest incarnation of Sniper Elite more of a sandbox game but in addition build at the awesome X-Ray Kill Cam and the atmospheric World War II setting. We’re looking ahead to seeing what Sniper Elite fans and gamers typically make of the most recent chapter inside the story,” said Jason Kingsley, CEO, Rebellion.

The idea of sneaking around in World War 2 Europe, hunting targets of interest while moving inside and outside of burnt out buildings around the European countryside isn’t a nasty one in any respect. Here’s hoping Rebellion and 505 can pull it off. Since the announcement trailer is more of a tease and because of its cinematic nature, none of this open world is shown.

Sniper Elite 3 would be coming to gamers in 2014 for all current and next gen game systems.

[Update] EA And Collegiate Licensing Company Settling Athlete Likeness Suit For $40 Million

Posted on October 10, 2013 at 10:05 am

Update: What was previously a report has now been confirmed by the attorneys handling the legal suit against Electronic Arts and NCAA Football. Lead plaintiff attorney for the case Michael Hausfeld said, “This can be a historic settlement. This settlement represents an acknowledgment that the NCAA’s rules barring payment to current and previous players cannot stand.”

Electronic Arts has agreed to pay “thousands and thousands of bucks” to the athletes featured in current NCAA Football games, in addition to previously released NCAA games.

Original story:

Yesterday, we reported that EA has decided to halt its NCAA Football series and that the publisher and the Collegiate Licensing Company are settling a suit with former college athletes. The lawsuit stems from using player likenesses in EA’s college football titles.

According to the New York Times, the settlement is worth $40 million and may be used to compensate student-athletes. In keeping with the report, there isn’t a plan yet for the way to divide and distribute the funds.

Our Take
The pressure is all at the NCAA immediately, as that organization is the sole defendant who hasn’t settled. Should that group lose in court, it might thoroughly imperil collegiate athletics as we all know them. There may be remuneration required for previous student-athletes, and it’ll likely mean a structure in place for college students moving forward.

NBA 2K14 Online game is a Slam Dunk

Posted on October 9, 2013 at 10:01 am

NBA 2k14 was released just in time for the beginning of the beginning of the NBA season. The newest version of the well-liked series hit stores today with eager fans able to purchase.

At the instant, 2k14 is barely available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 gaming consoles. The Xbox One and PS4 are set to release this November and both systems will carry a compatible version of the sport.

So far the reviews has been very positive for the sport. Many critics are giving high reviews equal to that of the former version.

One item of the sport this is certain to cause heated debate amongst game fans, is the player’s overall rating. The game’s developers invented a scoring system of 0-100 to rate the players on-court abilities. Jason Collins ranks because the game’s worst player (hmm, no surprise there) with a 50 point rating while the super human (and arguably the most effective real life player within the NBA) Lebron James is a near-perfect, 99.

The most heated arguments is often over the ratings given to the mid tier players. As an example Marc Gasol gets an 82 rating behind higher ranked Andrew Bynum and Al Jefferson during this online game reality, but is that truly accurate? While player skill level is somewhat subjective, the developers did an outstanding job of re-creating the fashion through which the genuine-life players actual play (funny how they do this).

Game fans can also be more than happy with the extent of realism in other aspects of the sport including; graphics, gameplay, star power or even the announcers feel super real. During gameplay, the timing and movement of the characters are noticeably more precise too. One drawback is that you’ll have to re-the right way to use the controls. You won’t be capable of use your finely-honed skills of yesteryear, and the hot control functions are a section tricky to get used to.

NBA 2K14 does, however, feature the brand new Route to Greatness. This mode permits you to create your individual narrative using the game’s star player, Lebron James. During this mode, Lebron starts out as a rookie and works his way up through a league the is created by you, the player.

Overall this game doesn’t disappoint. Genuinely, EA Sports improved upon the high standards of the game’s previous iterations by making it realer or even more fun to play.

Our Take
This month’s slate isn’t quite as strong because the previous couple of, but Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Hotline Miami are solid inclusions. Shadow of the Colossus is usually great to have on-hand if you have not played it. Inspite of a marginally weaker month, PlayStation Plus is still a terrific value.

GameStop Prepares For PS4 And Xbox One Launches With Hiring Spree

Posted on October 8, 2013 at 7:54 am

Does it sound like a dream come true to work at GameStop? In that case, the approaching launch of the Xbox One and PS4 can have just given you the excuse you should join their team.

GameStop announced today that it plans to rent 17,000 seasonal workers this holiday season in preparation for the Xbox and PS4 launches. Next gen consoles aren’t the best reason GameStop is hiring, however, because it also needs some extra help to house what it expects may be a hectic holiday season.

“Providing our customers a very good experience is of paramount importance in terms of defining who GameStop is as a retailer and delivering the entire value we provide our customers,” said Mike Buskey, Senior Vice chairman of Human Resources at GameStop. “The holiday season is our busiest time of the year, accounting for about 40% of our annual revenue. As we near the 2013 holiday season, and the approaching launches of the PS4 and Xbox One consoles, it’s critical that we attract and retain positive-talent both in our stores in addition to in our consumer electronics refurbishment and distribution centers.”

As you can find above, GameStop isn’t just hiring employees for its retail locations. Actually, it might be impossible to cram 17,000 new employees into its shrinking choice of retail locations. Many of the new hires will instead be assigned to GameStop’s refurbishment operation center or one in all its two distribution warehouses. For the previous, GameStop is seeking technicians to assist refurbish used consoles which can then be resold at its retail locations. For the latter, they’re searching for warehouse workers to assist ship out the entire orders GameStop’s online presence will undoubtedly receive this holiday season.

So, is there any benefit to working with GameStop? Like with most retail locations, the principle benefit is available in the shape of discounts – a fifteen percent discount to be exact. Folks that work as Game Advisors at GameStop’s retail locations even have the power to “rent” new games and take them home for just a few days.

While GameStop may say that it’s only hiring seasonal employees, there’s always the danger that it is able to develop into a career for a few of the new hires. It does happen, but you simply need to be hardworking and, as a rule, a bit lucky.

To discover more about GameStop’s hiring spree, investigate cross-check its careers Website for a catalogue of all open positions.

‘Shadow of the Eternals’ Development Halted

Posted on October 7, 2013 at 11:09 am

Developer Precursor Games today announced that development on Shadow of the Eternals was wear hold. Precursor had launched a Kickstarter campaign for the sport back in May, but cancelled it after it became clear it will fail. A second crowdfunding project was launched in July and came to a detailed in August, far wanting its funding goals.

Shadow of the Eternals was being promoted as a “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness, a well-liked horror game for the Nintendo Gamecube. Many former members of Silicon Knights were on staff at Precursor, including Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack. Silicon Knights and Dyack have a questionable reputation throughout the games industry, possibly contributing to the failure of the Shadow of the Eternals fundraising efforts.

Dyack, the executive creative officer at Precursor announced the the shutdown of the Shadow of the Eternals project in a post at the Precursor forums. On behalf of Precursor, his statement praised the games developers and its fan base, saying, “We are more than happy with what we now have accomplished both as a gaggle and with the community.” From the statement:

Many folks would be taking a break. In case you aren’t aware, all of us worked in this project as a labor of affection and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to aim to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we failed to succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we are hoping provided value for those involved. We haven’t any regrets.

The game also could have been hindered by its chosen platforms. Shadow of the Eternals was set to launch on Wii U and PC. PC gamers who don’t also use consoles are unlikely to have a history with Eternal Darkness, or even console gamers don’t seem buying the Wii U.
